NEW DATA ON THE MECHANISM OF WAVES.
Researchers from the Southern Division of the Oceanology Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Gelendjik gathered unique information of the wave formation process occurring under different conditions. The data is the first and by far the only research conducted in the Russian part of the Black Sea.
In 1996 the researchers put a wavegraph buoy to water in the lateral part of the sea and anchored it. The buoy enables to measure the height of waves up to 40 m and their direction with 1.5 degree of inaccuracy. The buoy looks like a sphere of 1 m in diameter and weighs around 200 kilos. It contains measuring tools. Every three hours (every hour if the weather is rough) it radios reports on the sea conditions. The highest wave of more than 12 meters was recorded at the end of last December. Waves like that occur approximately once in fifty years.
