  13. https://www.fao.org/waicent/faoinfo/fishery/ — FAO Fisheries Department. FAO’s Major Programme on Fisheries aims to promote sustainable development of responsible fisheries and contribute to food security. To implement this Major Programme, the Fisheries Department focuses its activities, through programmes in Fishery Resources, Fishery Policy, Fishery Industries and Fishery Information on three medium-term strategic objectives: Promotion of Responsible Fisheries Sector Management at the Global, Regional and National Levels, with priority given to the implementation of the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries, and particular attention paid to the problem of excess capacity and the provision of advice for the strengthening of Regional Fisheries Bodies. The Department continues to be fully involved in the implementation of important international fisheries instruments. Promotion of Increased Contribution of Responsible Fisheries and Aquaculture to World Food Supplies and Food Security. Following on the outcome of the Kyoto Conference on the Sustainable Contribution of Fisheries to Food Security, the Department focuses on reduction of waste in fisheries (particularly discards) and aquaculture (including its promotion in the context of FAO’s Special Programme for Food Security). Support is given to aquaculture development in areas of highest potential or critical need by improving aquaculture resources utilization and integration with agriculture, promoting research as well as protection and rehabilitation of the environment. Global Monitoring and Strategic Analysis of Fisheries, with priority given to development of databases and analysis of information using modern information systems (e.g. CD-ROM, GIS), and contributing inter alia to the publication of The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture (SOFIA) on a biennial basis and the Digital Atlas on Agriculture,Forestry and Fisheries.

  36. https://www.vims.edu/bio/microbial — The Microbial Ecology lab is a research unit of the Department of Biological Sciences, Virginia Institute of Marine Science, Gloucester Point, Virginia and the School of Marine Science of The College of William & Mary. Bacterioplankton are the smallest and most numerous autonomous organisms on the planet. Most cells are less than 0.5 microns in diameter, contain just a few femtograms (=10-15 grams) of carbon and have rather small genomes. Yet they are numerous, reaching densities of over 1 million cells per ml in the coastal and open sea, and even higher levels in estuaries. Bacterioplankton are the most widely distributed organisms on earth, flourishing near geothermal vents in the deep sea, in polar sea ice, and all areas in between these extremes. In many areas, bacterial biomass approaches or exceeds that of phytoplankton and zooplankton: they are an important component of marine foodwebs, and important agents of nutrient cycling and geochemical reactions.
