The NERC-CCMS offers unique access to experts and centres of excellence across the disciplines of marine science and technology. The marine environment is global and so NERC-CCMS scientists work with colleagues and industry around the world to understand large-scale processes (e.g. the role of the ocean in climate change) and on more specific, regional, issues such as the threats to marine biodiversity and human impacts on the marine environment through gross and sub-lethal pollution. CCMS scientists are developing novel research tools to detect pollution effects on marine organisms, which may become part of the human food chain. They are also at the forefront of developing new technology to monitor the marine environment and its resources in the 21st Century. Training and links to Universities both within the UK and abroad is a fundamental part of the Centre’s activities. Through collaborative programmes CCMS expertise is being used to help developing countries manage their marine environment and resources, and also train their young scientists and technologists. The Centre has an active visitor programme for overseas researchers and students to work at its laboratories.

  87. https://www.marlab.ac.uk # Fisheries Research Services (FRS) is an Agency within the Scottish Executive Rural Affairs Department (SERAD). FRS is headed by a Director who is responsible to the Secretary of State for Scotland. The aim of FRS is to provide expert scientific and technical advice and information on marine and fresh water fisheries, on aquaculture, and on the protection of the aquatic environment and its wildlife. This is to ensure, as far as possible, that Government policy and its regulatory and statutory activities are informed by a full and up-to-date knowledge of marine and freshwater fisheries, of aquaculture, and of the aquatic environment. The functions of FRS are: to provide timely scientific and technical advice to support The Scottish Office’s policies and regulatory responsibilities in relation to fisheries, aquaculture and the aquatic environment. This includes representing Scottish and where appropriate, UK interests at national and international meetings which call for a scientific and technical input; to undertake specific services, both for The Scottish Office and other Government Departments and, subject to the approval of Ministers, for third parties; to maintain a continuing programme of scientific and technical activities, including monitoring and research, to underpin the first two functions.

Among the areas studied are waves, currents, and tides in nearshore and estuarine waters; sediment transport by waves, winds, and rivers; fluid-sediment interactions; and marine archaeology. CCS members are oceanographers with common needs for specialized research support and facilities for the conduct of their investigations. The Center also provides graduate training in oceanography through the SIO Graduate Department and is involved in the development of ocean engineering programs.
