Scientists. Utilize near real-time data on flow, sea surface temperature, wind and ocean color to augment your current research or future investigation plans. Background: Though the oceans cover over 70% of the Earth’s surface, we have explored only a small percentage of their vast expanse and are just beginning to grasp the complexities of the global ocean system. In 1998, the global impacts of the ocean have been dramatically illustrated, as the effects of one of the largest and most costly El Niсo events continue to be felt worldwide. Ocean currents play an extremely important role in the global transfer of water, heat, organisms, nutrients, potential pollutants, and sediments. From the time explorers set sail to discover new lands to the present day when deep-sea submersibles venture deep into the oceans depths, knowledge of how water flows within the sea has been sought. Today we use satellite and computer technology, combined with years of experience to investigate how water moves within the ocean. In one of the earliest attempts to study ocean currents, scientists aboard the R.M.S. Challenger used a float designed specifically to drift passively with the flow of water. The 1872 Challenger Expedition was the first sea voyage whose sole purpose was to study the world’s oceans. Of course in those days, the path of the drifter had to be tracked by an accompanying boat, making this a time-consuming and spatially-limited activity. Using mo dern technology, today’s oceanographers have developed an ingenious way to use the same principles, but with much greater accuracy and spatial coverage.

  73. https://www.sciencenet.com/conference/spool/Project_Tomorrow/Project_Tomorrow.html # Scientists from Rutgers and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution developed and conducted an integrated set of educational programs that capitalize on the research and technological assets of a Long-term Ecosystem Observatory (LEO-15). Activities resulting from this program are engaging students in real-time science to improve their problem solving and critical thinking skills—essential skills to interpret, analyze, and communicate information. Field experiences were used to 1) enhance educator capability in science content and skills, 2) immerse school systems in an inquiry-driven, active learning process, and 3) establish links to real-time scientific information in support of classroom activities. The project featured a summer field program funded by the National Oceanographic Partnership Program (NOPP), where precollege educators incorporated real-time environmental information available through LEO-15 and satellite remote sensing technology into existing, interdisciplinary curricula. Internet-based, instructional modules produced by this effort are being disseminated broadly through the Bridge Clearinghouse, another NOPP-funded effort that is a repository for innovative educational programs. Preliminary results of project evaluations indicate the need for education programs that are scientifically robust, and access to environments typically unreachable by the yellow school bus.

TAMUG is a highly specialized institution involved with both graduate and undergraduate education and research in all aspects of oceanic science. Its motto, «The Ocean Is Our Classroom,» expresses the high degree of hands-on activity in the curriculum, working in the marshes, bay and deep water adjacent to our coastal campus. Unlike at other schools of its type, TAMUG undergraduates, who call themselves Sea Aggies, work closely with distinguished researchers and often have their own work published, a role usually restricted to graduate students. Our small student-to-faculty ratio produces an excellent classroom environment. And classrooms are equipped with the latest in audio/visual aids plus personal computers. Undergraduate degrees are offered in Marine Biology, Marine Sciences (Oceanography), Marine Engineering Technology, Marine Transportation, Marine Fisheries, Maritime Systems Engineering (ocean/civil), Maritime Administration (policy/business) and Maritime Studies. TAMUG is also home to the Texas Maritime Academy, through which students may elect to pursue, along with their undergraduate degrees, training toward their licenses as merchant marine officers. This involves three two-month summer cruises aboard the Texas Clipper II, with calls at ports in Europe, South America, the Caribbean and the Pacific. Academy cadets wear merchant marine uniforms during class hours. Applicants who can meet the high admission requirements and fulfill the rigorous curriculum standards will, upon graduation, receive the coveted Texas A&M University degree and may wear the Aggie ring, recognized on sight by Texas A&M former stu dents throughout the world.

  86. https://www.unis.no — The University Courses on Svalbard (UNIS) is a private foundation established by the Norwegian government and owned by Norway’s four universities. The objective of the foundation is to offer university-level courses and to perform research relevant to Svalbard’s geographical location in the high arctic. This location makes the archipelago an ideal location for both laboratory work, and the collection and analysis of data. The courses are intended to complement the teaching given by the mainland universities, and they form part of standard courses of study that lead to examinations and degrees at intermediate, advanced and doctoral level. UNIS is located in Longyearbyen. It came into operation in autumn 1993, when its first 23 students started courses in Arctic Geology and Arctic Geophysics. In autumn 1994, the range of subjects offered were expanded to include Arctic Biology, and a total of 33 students were admitted. The Arctic Technology programme was initially introduced in the autumn of 1996. UNIS reached its intended size of some 100 students and about 35 different courses during 1996. The study programmes will gradually be given an international profile, and up to half of our students will be recruited from abroad. The instruction will therefore be in English. In August 1995, UNIS moved into a new building (3200m²) which provides students and staff with good working conditions. In the longer term, UNIS will form the core of the Svalbard Science Centre (SSC), an international Arctic centre of expertise in research and education on Svalbard, which will also incorporate a large number of professional and scientific institutions on the archipelago.
